Why are Health & Safety Audits important?
Health & Safety Audits (sometimes called HSEQ Audits) are a structured review of your Health, Safety, Environment and Quality practices—designed to check what’s working, what needs improvement, and where any risks or gaps may lie.
They are a powerful safeguard against potential risk to people, assets and business — allowing businesses to anticipate and address issues before they lead to accidents, legal issues and disruption to operations. In establishing and adhering to an H&S Audit schedule, your business is also demonstrating commitment to compliance.
These audits also regularly highlight areas for improvement in efficiency and performance — often identifying ways to reduce costs and downtime. The net result is a positive reputation for safety and quality, both within your market and within your team.
FAQs
A Health and Safety Audit is a detailed assessment of an organisation against International Standard (ISO45001) or Health and Safety Legal requirements.
An audit will allow you to understand the level of compliance against the requirements and provide you a list of actions needed to allow you to meet your obligations in relation to Health and Safety law.
A Health & Safety audit can be used as a grounding for your safety management system.
An internal Health and Safety audit is an audit completed at the request of an organisation for their own purposes. The audit can be completed by a member of the organisation’s staff if they have the correct competence to do so, or by a third-party consultant, such as Quensh.
An external audit is completed entirely by a separate legal entity for their purposes. The external audit may be completed by a customer, certification body or regulator and the findings raised in this audit will be communicated with the organisation as well as others outside your organisation.
Health and Safety data may include key performance indicators such as leading indicators which suggest proactive health and safety management (site inspections completed, risk assessments completed, Health and Safety Representatives meetings) or lagging indicators which cover reactional health and safety performance (Accidents & Incidents which have occurred, near misses and energy used by the organisation).
Both leading and lagging indicators can be analysed to identify health and safety performance, culture and effectiveness of health and safety control measures.
Increasingly, UK and European regulations promote active collaboration with suppliers to ensure the safety and health of all people that are involved in a production or service lifecycle, as well as the impact on the natural environment that has been sustained through the production/service life cycle.
Customers and regulators seek to ensure that organisations value not only their own but also their suppliers environmental, health and safety performance.
